An special talk by Dj AFroraizz Selektah who cames directly from venezuela in a short visit to london to talk about the well known Collective Tiuna el Fuerte, a local community collective that uses art, music and culture to transform the barrio of El Valle in Caracas, Venezuela. Situated on an old parking lot they developed into a cultural park using reclaimed materials, Tiuna el Fuerte now hosts a hip-hop school, a youth orchestra, a mobile community radio, and serves as an example for an alternative space for the community.

The space is a “nucleus of endogenous cultural development,” exemplifying the concept of local development of the people, for the people, by the people that finds its roots in modern day Venezuela.

LOKANDES is the combination of two words: ‘Crazy’ and ‘Andes’ which represents the intention of their music – crazy music from the Andes -. This project was started in London, during December 2007, by Carlos Saldaña and Alx Alfaro. This project aims to create Alternative music with roots from traditional Andean music. LOKANDES entered its second phase completing the band line up with musicians from different parts of the world and joined on stage with some of the best peruvian musicians based in London to complete an special line up.

LOKANDES aims to bring its audiences original music with socially conscious lyrics, at the same time bringing awareness to Latin-American cultures playing a red hot fusion of Afro-Andean and Latin beats with other contemporary music styles such as Funk, Latin, Reggae, Jazz, cumbia, etc.. Taking the melodies and energy of Andean music and bringing it up to date.

The band will released their new album “Positive Energy” on a special night at the Bolivar Hall with the support on stage by the most talented latin american musicians based in London. We will have some latin american food and drinks to enjoy this great night accompanied by music and friends.

The capsule used to rescue 33 miners who were trapped for 69 days in a mine in Chile during 2011 has gone on display in London at the Science Museum in South Kensington. By showing the capsule at the museum, we hope to draw attention to the technical and engineering challenges that the rescue team tackled during this extraordinary operation.”

The steel capsule, 3.9m (12.7ft) tall and 54cm (1.7ft) wide, known as Fenix 2, will be on show at the Science Museum in South Kensington. The 460kg Fenix 2 was one of five built by Chilean Navy engineers to winch up the miners, one at a time. The 33 men were stuck 625m (2,050ft) below ground when part of the mine in San Jose collapsed on 5 August 2010.

The capsule, which had communication equipment and retractable wheels to help its movement through the shaft, also had enough oxygen-enriched air to last the 20-minute journey to the surface. Katrina Nilsson, from the Science Museum, said: “I’m sure we can all remember the moment when the first miner was pulled to the surface after being trapped for almost 10 weeks.

The capsule will be on display until 13 May.

The capsule was specially built to rescue 33 miners who were trapped underground at the San José mine, Chile in October 2010. The 3.9m capsule is made of steel and measures 54cm wide. All of the men were rescued from the mine 700m below after being trapped for 69 days – surviving longer underground than anyone on record.

Katrina Nilsson, Contemporary Science Manager, Science Museum, said “We’re honoured to display the Chilean rescue capsule at the Science Museum – it’s an icon of the unprecedented rescue mission of the 33 miners. I’m sure we can all remember the moment when the first miner was pulled to the surface after being trapped for almost ten weeks. By showing the capsule at the museum, we hope to draw attention to the technical and engineering challenges that the rescue team tackled during this extraordinary operation.”

The capsule was fitted with enough oxygen-enriched air to last the 20 minute journey to the surface, as well as communication equipment and retractable wheels to help it run smoothly up and down the mine shaft. It weighs 460kg, is painted red, white and blue (Chilean flag colours) and is fitted with an emergency release mechanism so if the capsule got stuck, the miners could winch back down into the mine. It was designed by the Chilean Navy and built by Chilean Navy engineers.

The capsule, on show at the Science Museum until 13th May, is a replica of the Fenix 2 that rescued the miners and was also built by the Chilean Navy. The display highlights the extraordinary technical challenge of the rescue, which involved hundreds of engineers, technicians and scientists.

World Circuit Records are due to release ‘Cumbia Cumbia 1 & 2’ as a re-mastered double CD and limited edition double LP on March 19, 2012. Originally released by World Circuit as two separate albums – ‘Cumbia Cumbia’ in 1989 and ‘Cumbia Cumbia 2’ in 1993 – this collection brings together some of the greatest recordings made by Colombia’s legendary record label, Discos Fuentes, between 1954 and 1988.

Cumbia, the music and the dance synonymous with Colombia, has been around almost since the 17th century. Today, it’s a badge of identity for Colombians everywhere, but is now also enjoying a global renaissance; filling dance floors and captivating a new generation of music fans.

Discos Fuentes was founded in Cartagena in 1934 by the visionary musician, arranger and producer, Antonio Lopez Fuentes. It was the first important record label in the country and grew into a company of immense significance for Colombian music, responsible for thousands of hits and scores of legendary singers and musicians over six decades. Fuentes hand-picked his musicians and singers then meticulously arranged, produced and recorded their music in-house.

This collection presents thirty of these three-minute-masterpieces, showcasing the gamut of styles that make up the distinctive and irresistible cumbia sound; a sound typified by a loping 2/4 gait and a pulsing rocksteady bassline, overlaid with heavy rural percussion, brass, accordion, clarinet, electric guitar and vocals. Disc 1 features a broad range of cumbia styles with recordings from 1960 through to 1988, whilst disc 2 digs further into the classics of the past focusing almost exclusively on the 1950s and 1960s.

Featuring cumbia’s biggest hits from Rodolfo y su Tipica, Gabriel Romero, Sonora Dinamita and Armando Hernandez ‘Cumbia Cumbia 1 & 2’ is a flawless collection from the Golden Age of Cumbia.

A rare and exciting opportunity to view and purchase artwork by up to 30 of Cubas foremost artists, in one of the most comprehensive displays of art from Cuba seen to date in London. This unique show will also display work by celebrated artists mainly based in the UK, including Susan Hiller, Mona Hatoum, Derek Boshier, Peter Kennard/Cat Phillipps, Rasheed Araeen, and Rose Finn-Kelcey.

Beyond the Frame will highlight the diversity of Cuban visual arts that has a relatively recent, yet well-established presence on the international art scene. It will draw together works in various styles and mediums within the unifying theme of the frame. Cubas extensive cultural practice will be showcased with newly commissioned work by Manuel Mendive, Kcho, Roberto Diago, Choco, Gustavo Díaz Sosa, René Peña, José Fuster, Eduardo Abela Torres and numerous others, including renowned Cuban photographers who captured the epic events of Cubas revolution such as Ernesto Fernández, Liborio Noval and Roberto Salas.

Artists participating in Beyond the Frame have exhibited extensively in solo and group shows throughout the world; have work held in numerous public and private collections; and are the recipients of many awards and honours. Aster Paulen looks for a harmonic conjunction of the sounds and the creation of singable and understandable melodies, with very subjective lyrics, rarely real, but never meaningless… The influences are mostly British, classic or modern, from psychedelic rock, glam rock, classic rock to British pop… The band is wide open to the possibility of experimentation, believes in mental expansion and ways of finding new horizons, mixing influences that range from music up to art itself, literary, pictorial or theatrical… Aster Paulen is not a band that limits itself to music… Rather, one that accepts any pleasant and strange way to combine the music with any other art in order to make the colors of the sound dance in the mind or to create expectation, astonishment, perplexity or only rare and very dreamlike feelings. The influences are mostly British, classic or modern, from psychedelic rock, glam rock, classic rock to British pop.

Rocinante! Rocinante! is the practical outcome of an ongoing research project on theatre, visual arts, music and psychiatry that aims to develop and deepen our understanding of mental illness through the study of specific cases of delusional behaviours and distorted perception of reality.
This interdisciplinary collaboration between Panta Rei Theatre Collective, Rose Bruford College, London metropolitan University and Dr Zerrin Atakan aims to translate into theatrical form the current scientific understanding of illusion and hallucination triggered by traumatic experiences such as a violent and unexpected death.

Taking inspiration from two of the most celebrated and fascinating portrays of madness – Don Quixote de la Mancha and Hamlet – the piece aims to stimulate a deeper understanding on mental illness and provocatively encourage the audience to think about the limitations of the conventional dualistic interpretation of life and its rigid separation of opposites: reality and illusion; sanity and madness; life and death; masculine and feminine.
The piece is strongly influenced by the grotesque humour of commedia dell’Arte and the Spanish Golden Age. Hieronymus Bosch’s paintings have been utilised as visual stimuli to create Don Quixote’s nightmares and visions of Hell.

Hector Bejar is a Peruvian social scientist, a lawyer and a journalist. He has a PhD in Sociology and a Masters in Social policy and is currently Professor of Sociology at the National University of San Marcos (Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos) and the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru).

He is author of ‘The Guerrillas of 1965 in Peru’, on one of the guerrilla movements of the sixties in Peru, which won the ‘Casa de las Americas’ Latin American award in 1969. He is also author of numerous essays and articles as well as books such as ‘The Revolution Trapped’, concerning the revolutionary political process in Peru 1968-1975; ‘The campesino organization’ (1980), about indigenous communities and rural development; ‘Social Justice, Social policy’ (2002, 2004, 2006, 2011) and ‘Millennium Goals and Millennium Myths’ (2010). From 1989 to 2010, he was also Director of ‘Socialism and Participation’, one of the first social science journals in Peru.

Political life: In his youth Héctor Béjar was Press Secretary and member of the Political Commission of the Peruvian Communist Party, and founder of the party newspaper Unidad (Unity) in 1956. Breaking from the party in 1959, he has remained a left-wing socialist ever since. In subsequent years, he was a founder-member of the National Liberation Army (1962-66) which was active in the 1965 guerrilla movement, leading to his serving five years in prison before his pardon by the government of General Juan Velasco Alvarado in 1970.

Between 1971 and 1975 he was a founder-member and one of the directors of the National System for Support of Social Mobilization (SINAMOS) working on the organization of the youth, rural, cooperative and popular movements through agrarian reform. Since 1975 he has worked on development, taught in universities and study social issues in Peru. He is one of the founders of the Research Centre for Development and Participation, Lima (CEDEP).
