Exhibition : Jonathas de Andrade (Brazil) . Until 3 July 2011

Jonathas de Andrade works with photography, installation, and film to document the shifting terrain of private narratives within larger social spaces, exploring such themes as failed modernity and cultural amnesia.

In his work, the act of photographing represents a crucial creative tool, but also acts as a historic device; a medium spanning fiction and document that makes possible the dialogue between action, research, architecture, and state census. Exploring social and cultural conditions of place, de Andrade employs Investigative processes such researching, mapping and surveying – using historical and archaeological documents and found artefacts to gently weave new fictions. His work is none the less about individual memory- personal experiences that start to resemble a collective one.

Basing his research on the archives housed at the library of Chelsea College of Arts, Jonathas de Andrade will re-trace the collection of brutalist architecture in convergence/connection with tropical modernism in Brazil. During his time at Gasworks, the artist will produce and manufacture ‘official’ documents in order to create fictional games that underscore and make visible current and shifting power relations both in Brazil and the UK.

Jonathas de Andrade lives and works in Recife, Brazil. His residency is the result of a partnership between Gasworks and TrAIN.

Recent solo shows include: Ressaca Tropical, Galeria Vermelho, Sao Paulo, Brazil (2010), Programa de Exposicoes, Centro Cultural de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil (2010), 29th Bienal de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil (2010), Primeira e Ultima, Galeria Luisa Strina, Sao Paulo, Brazil (2010), Rosa dos Ventos, Galeria Fayga Ostrower, Brasilia, Brazil (2009), Amor e Felicidade no Casamento, Itau Cultural, Sao Paulo, Brazil (2008), Conducao a Deriva, 7th Bienal do Mercosul, Porto Alegre, Brazil (2008).
