Leicester City V Real Madrid FC : 30th July

Leicester City Football Club is delighted to confirm that the Foxes will host Spanish giants Real Madrid in the summer’s premier pre-season friendly.

The nine-time European champions will visit the Walkers Stadium on Saturday July 30, one week before the start of the 2011/12 Football League campaign, for what will be Real’s only fixture in the UK this summer.

The game will put Sven-Goran Eriksson’s Foxes up against some of world football’s elite, with some of the biggest names in the sport potentially lining up in Madrid’s famous white jerseys.

Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, Brazilian playmaker Kaká and Spanish World Cup winners Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso are among the household names in José Mourinho’s star-studded squad, which reached the semi-finals of this season’s Champions League.

Leicester City Vice-Chairman, Aiyawatt Raksriaksorn, said: “It has always been our intention to organise a landmark home friendly as a thank you to our fantastic supporters. Seeing the stars of Real Madrid playing on our pitch is a truly mouth-watering prospect.

“We are all extremely focused on achieving success at Leicester City next season and, as well as seeing Real Madrid in action, I am hopeful that this fixture will give Foxes fans a first chance to see some new heroes of their own in action.”

Leicester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson said: “It is fantastic that Leicester City will be taking on one of the world’s most famous teams. Real Madrid is a club with great tradition and their squad is filled with world-class players.

“Their manager, Jose Mourinho, is someone who demands the best from his players, whatever the occasion, and I’m sure it will be an exciting day for our players and, of course, all of our supporters. This fixture shows that the club is growing all the time and emphasises the owners’ commitment to moving Leicester City forward.”

Spain’s most decorated club with 31 La Liga titles in a glittering 109-year history, Real Madrid have long been established as one of the biggest and best-supported football clubs in the world.

Their iconic all-white strip is one of the most recognisable in world sport and has been worn by some of the best players to have ever played the game, including Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo.

The game will be the first ever meeting between City and Los Blancos and will be the perfect curtain-raiser to the 2011/12 season, as City look to make a strong start in their quest to reach the Premier League.

Emilio Butragueño, former Real Madrid player and the club’s Institutional Relationship Director, said:”We are very excited about this game because we are convinced it will be a great occasion for all of us involved, above all, for the fans. We are really looking forward to playing against Leicester City, whose manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson, has had a highly successful career and he has earned prestige worldwide.

“At the same time, we hope this will be the beginning of a long-lasting relationship with Leicester City. Needless to say we are delighted to play once more in England, a country where we have always received a warm welcome, and the fans are very passionate about this wonderful sport.”
