ARTE COCODRILO (MEX) @ Multiplied Contemporary Editions Fair : 14 -17 October, London

ARTE COCODRILO | Mexico | Booth 27 – Across the water: Cocodrilo / On the other side of the water: Cocodrilo – René Almanza  | Uriel Marín | Daniel Berman | Daniel Acosta | Edgar “Bacalao” Argáez

The stroke is the wound. The word is surface and content. That archetype, consensus magic in the reading eye and the talking image which has been given for once and forever. It is always the image, the revealing of the dark corner of the unknown, which is shaped and reformulated. In this word, language is that unspoken. It only shows and it’s shown.

There, in the threshold, before the sample and the fact; between observance and the seal, the gaze springs as a squama. The squama as the unique trace of a brutal, wounded action of an objectified knowledge. This complicated situation, producer and product at the same time, mesmerizing and terrifying oracle of irreconcilable visions. This situation, I repeat, is stamped on the eyes

Arte Cocodrilo.

This group of Mexican artists is a consequence of that almost impossible north-south geographic and political condition, of the support and condition of growing the land around each individual. This is the icon that brings together experimenting and creation, and that in its interior joins a personal world, ours and everybody else’s. René Almanza, Edgar “Bacalao” Argáez, Daniel Acosta, Uriel Marín and Daniel Berman, are its active members. Lines, letters, drawings, strokes, graphics, traces, ripping, smudges, explosions. A universe within another, independent between them, connected by an iconic logo and terribly symbolic is what springs from their graphic artwork. A commitment with history and Mexican identity is interpreted in each symbol. The symbol of the crocodile represents the knowledge of ancestry. Live history. The crocodile is that surviving and devouring species. The crocodile as its own history, and the story that keeps being retold, defining itself from the inside.

Arte Cocodrilo, live simultaneously in the Mexican cities of Oaxaca and Monterrey taking graphics as their main discipline among the visual arts. Strong followers of the Mexican graphic tradition, they move from the long history under the misty Pre- Hispanic world to contemporary tendencies. Their extensive and profound work is presented in this edition of Multipled.  Edgar Leal, Mexico 2011
