To help celebrate a fantastic summer of sport in London this year, the Embassy of Uruguay is presenting an exhibition commemorating the First Football World Cup, held in Uruguay in 1930. The exhibition has recently been shown at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris and consists of 30 exhibits including 22 photographs, explanatory texts and other topic related items.
The inaugu…ral Jules Rimet Trophy was won by the hosts, who although trailing at half-time beat neighbours Argentina 4-2 in real thriller in front of 100,000 fans that filled the Centenário Stadium in Montevideo to the brim. The celebrations lasted for days and the 31st July was declared a national holiday. To top it all off, July 1930 also saw Uruguay celebrate its centenary year of Constitution’s Day.
Uruguay went into the tournament in 1930 as the two previous Olympic champions (1924 Paris and 1928 Amsterdam) and it is fitting that this year a highly rated Uruguayan National Football Team will compete in the London Olympics, playing Great Britain in Cardiff on 29th July with their other two group games taking place in Manchester and in London.
This free exhibition is a real must for all fans of the beautiful game.
OUT OF HOURS GUIDED TOURS: A guided visit of the exhibition by an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay who is on an Official Mission to the UK for the London 2012 Olympic Games Third Secretary Juan Barboza will take place on the following days:
- Monday 30 July from 6:00-7:00pm
