DANCE | Tango Rojo London International Tango Arts Festival .17 – 20 May

TangoRojo is a tango festival with a difference—it’s a showcase of absolute tango artistry. Every year we bring you unique and spectacular tango artists; they come from diverse backgrounds, excel at new and unusual techniques in tango as a dance form and tango as an art, as a form of expression. There isn’t a festival like it anywhere in the UK, and that’s a promise!

ART | Santiago Bell Installation, Chile. 17 – 30 May

Born in 1932, Santiago Bell was a Chilean educator, political activist, poet and artist. He was imprisoned and tortured by the Pinochet regime in the 1970s; he later came to Britain as a political refugee. Santiago was an artist/craftsman whose political insight and theological reflection found expression in finely carved imaginative wooden constructions. Santiago Bell died in 2005.

Ruben Szuchmacher, one of Argentina’s most influential and controversial directors, brings a new production of this elegiac and funny masterpiece. A celebrated defender of the theatre’s freedom from the state, his work combines the richness of Shakespeare’s texts with a simple theatrical aesthetic. His approach has won him great acclaim as one of the most admired Shakespearean artists in South America.
