Colombian Vallenato performed in London’s BBC studios for the First Time in History

On Friday, January 27th 2012, at 8:15pm, Colombian vallenato music entered the history of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) as the newest genre of music to be played live in studio. This effort was made possible thanks to BBC World Routes, BBC Radio 3, Latinos in London Ltd, the generous participation of Egidio Cuadrado (Rey Vallenato and accordionist to Carlos Vives), percussionists Alfonso de Jesus & Jorge Cano, base player David Morel and the inmense raw talent of London’s very own Jose Hernando Arias Noguera, the 2012 winner of the BBC World Routes Grant.

This event will explore the concepts and histories of Western democracy and liberal democracy and contrast the latter with the popular/direct democracy being built in countries such as Cuba and Venezuela.

Symposium: Latin American Migration in London . 20 January

This interdisciplinary symposium will provide an opportunity to present and discuss new studies of the conditions of the Latin American migrant communities in London. The symposium introduces recent academic research projects on the topic and the cultural experience of Latin Americans living in the capital. The panels will be composed of academics and leading London-based Latin Americans from the media and art sectors.

Latin America & Spain reign supreme in Europe @ FIFA Ballon D’or Awards 2011

The 2011/12 season FIFA Ballon D’or Awards were a clean sweep for Latin America & Spain with all major awards going to players and managers from Spain, Argentina & Brazil. Most noticeably, Argentina’s Lionel Messi won his third  consecutive FIFA World Player Trophy, equalling Michel Platini, Marco VanBasten & Johan Cruyff.

Sounds Venezuela 2012

The sensational series Sounds Venezuela returns for a third year, welcoming back the superstar conductor Gustavo Dudamel and his electric Simón BolÍvar Symphony Orchestra. The festival celebrates Venezuela’s Sistema, a world-famous programme designed to connect young people from underprivileged backgrounds with classical music. London Spanish-language Literature Reading Group – January 2012

With the support of a growing band of subscribers, and some development funding from the Arts Council, “& Other Stories” is delighted to be bringing mindblowing translations of Spanish Language books to the British public. Our networks of readers, writers and literary translators have brought some real finds to our attention via our reading groups. This January’s meet-up will discuss English translations of books by Mexican, Cuban and Colombian authors: Carmen Boullosa’s “El complot de los Románticos” (Conspiracy of the Romantics), Abilio Estevez’s ”El navegante dormido” (The Sleeping Seafarer) & Antonio Ungar’s “Tres ataúdes blancos” (Three White Coffins).
